Voice input

Type, or just talk. If the microphone isn't working, here's how to fix it.

Allow the microphone

Voice input needs your microphone. If the mic was denied, allow it in two places:

In the address bar
Click the site-settings icon next to the address, then set Microphone to Allow.
→
In System Settings
Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and switch your browser on.
→
Restart the browser
Quit the browser completely and reopen it, then try voice input again.

The browser asks the first time you use the mic — pick Allow.

Apps that have requested microphone access appear here.
Google Chrome
macOS also keeps its own microphone switch for each browser.

If recognition isn't available

Voice input sends your audio to a speech-recognition service. On some networks — for example in mainland China — that service can't be reached, so recognition never starts or returns any text.

Everything else works as usual. Type instead, or try again later on another network.

Good to know

  • Voice input works in Chrome, Edge and Safari. Firefox doesn't support it yet.
  • Your audio is only captured while you're actively using the mic — it isn't stored.
